Hi, I'm Harry
I started Big Tea in 2024 because I couldn't find a tea bag that actually did what it said on the box. The ingredients were lacking, the quality was grim, and nobody seemed to have clocked that you can put whatever you want in a tea bag.
So I started making my own. Best ingredients I could find, doses backed by actual research, because I love tea and couldn't work out why something people drink every day was getting so little care. Tea bags exist because they're convenient. There was no reason they couldn't also be good, and with modern plant-based materials, no reason they needed plastic in them either.
After years in tech marketing, and making my own brews at night, I thought, how hard can it be to market tea? Turns out, very hard. Tea isn't exactly a sexy category, and you're up against the big boys; brands with big pockets for marketing (but somehow still skimp on quality?) Funnily enough, the name is a not to them.
Anyway, I quit my job, moved onto a canal boat, and started Big Tea.
A year or so later, we're still on the boat, but the tea itself now comes out of a small production facility in the UK. Our Sichuan Chilli Chai just picked up 3 stars at the Great Taste Awards, and there are people out there who love this stuff that I've never even met. That's the whole philosophy, really - make something you'd want to exist, whether or not anyone asked you to.
The Quest for Better Bags
When we approached manufacturers with our radical "more tea, bigger bags" concept, the responses genuinely consisted of:
"It's not possible.”
“You can’t deviate from the standard teabag size, no one does.”
"For the fifth time, no, please stop calling this number."
"Due to my parents' divorce at a young age, I'm now acutely afraid of change."
But like a perfectly steeped cup, good things take time. We eventually found innovative partners willing to share our vision and we created roomy, plant-based tea bags that could actually handle our generous portions. Each one holds over three grams of whole-leaf tea or large-cut herbs, nearly double the industry standard. Because a proper tea deserves proper space.
